Environmental Monitoring

Open Ocean Robotics is transforming how environmental data is collected and used to protect our oceans. Our solar-powered, uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs) provide researchers, regulators, and conservation groups with continuous, real-time insights from the water’s surface.

As the demand for sustainable ocean management grows, we offer an efficient and emission-free way to monitor marine ecosystems, detect environmental change, and support science-based decision-making — all without disturbing the environments we aim to protect.

Under the Sea

 Key Capabilities

 Oceanographic Data Collection

We collect continuous oceanographic data  using advanced sensors to support research, environmental management, and climate impact assessments.

Marine Mammal Monitoring

We detect and track marine mammals with thermal cameras and passive acoustic sensors, helping researchers study behavior and the effects of human activity on marine ecosystems.

Seafloor & Habitat Mapping

We use high-resolution sonar to map the seafloor and detect habitats like coral reefs and seagrass beds, supporting conservation efforts and ecosystem monitoring over time

Water Quality Assessment

We provide high-resolution, real-time water quality data to track pollution, monitor harmful algal blooms, and assess the environmental impact of coastal and industrial activities.

Operational Use Cases

Learn how our partners and customers are applying Open Ocean Robotics’ solutions to better understand and protect the marine environment. These featured applications show how our USVs are used for biodiversity studies, marine mammal detection, and ecosystem research in coastal and offshore waters.

eDNA Sampling

In September 2024, DataXplorer™ Enviro+eDNA was deployed by Stony Brook University in Shinnecock Bay as part of the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program. Outfitted with a McLane RoCSI sampler, the solar-powered USV collected over 100 viable eDNA samples during eight deployments across two weeks, even operating in shallow waters as little as 0.5 m deep. This autonomous, zero-emission approach demonstrated how USVs can expand biodiversity monitoring while reducing costs, risks, and environmental disturbance.
