New open-access dataset could transform how we detect and classify killer whale vocalizations.

We’re proud to share that Dr. Oliver Kirsebom, Senior Data Scientist at Open Ocean Robotics, has been published as a co-author on a newly released article in Scientific Data by Nature. The paper, titled A Public Dataset of Annotated Orcinus orca Acoustic Signals for Detection and Ecotype Classification, presents a major open-access dataset that could significantly advance the field of marine mammal acoustics.

This collaborative effort brings together experts in bioacoustics, machine learning, and ocean science to support more accurate detection and classification of killer whale vocalizations. With applications ranging from conservation to real-time monitoring, this dataset lays important groundwork for using AI and acoustic sensing in the protection of marine mammals.

We're thrilled to see Oliver’s research contributing to the wider scientific community and aligning with Open Ocean Robotics’ mission to better understand and protect our oceans. You can read the full article here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-025-05281-5
